Aemulative actions often have a progressive effect, be it through innovative adaptation, modulation or perfection of what already exists, but also through an ironic break with traditional viewing habits. These processes, through which cultural, social and media conditions are renegotiated in both the production and reception of art, form the thematic focus of the volume. A cross-epoch and cross-cultural perspective on the ongoing change in meaning of visual signs and artistic processes is presented. The confrontation of different historical, cultural and aesthetic contexts examined in the case studies is able to dynamize the art discourse, open up new perspectives and make clear the ongoing social explosiveness of current art and works from past eras.
The commemorative publication dedicated to Thomas Kirchner is edited by Ulrike Kern (research assistant at the Art History Institute of the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main) and Marlen Schneider (Maître de Conférences at the Université Grenoble Alpes / LARHRA).
